Rugby Scoreboards

Welcome to Bespoke Scoreboards for rugby

Established in 1977 and manufacturing scoreboards since 2009, we’re an electronics company with a wealth of experience and knowledge. From our family business based in Yorkshire, we design, manufacture, install and service our scoreboards nationwide.

We offer a range of rugby scoreboards for all budgets. From small, portable scoreboards that fit in the back of your car to large, permanent installations.

Scoreboard digits

We sell a range of standard scoreboards displaying the score and match time. These scoreboards are available with the LED digits from 6 to 16 inches in height.

The timer displays minutes and seconds. It can count up from zero to a maximum of 99 minutes and 59 seconds, or you can set the minutes for it to count down from. The timer can be paused and restarted.

Our scoreboards have an anti-reflective coating applied to the polycarbonate glazing.

Standard scoreboard prices

The standard layouts and prices will satisfy most requirements. We manufacture everything and are very flexible with layout to accommodate the space or weathertight housing you may already have.

If you are looking to just display the score, or just wanting the timer, then these prices are further down this page.

Scoreboard construction

Our electronic rugby scoreboards come housed in weathertight enclosures that are very robust. They are glazed with 5mm extruded polycarbonate, with an anti-reflective coating added to prevent the glare of direct sunlight.

It is extremely unlikely that you will break the glazing. The scoreboard fascia and back panel are made using 9mm Latvian birch ply with a black phenolic finish.

This is an exceptional quality plywood with great weatherproof qualities due to the phenolic coating. Ventilation is built into the back of the scoreboard to deal with condensation.

The air flow for ventilation must be considered if the scoreboard is being mounted to a wall. Our wall mounting brackets allow for a large enough air gap, but if you are putting a roller shutter over the scoreboard, you must ensure that it doesn’t prevent the air flow.
The sides of the scoreboard case are manufactured from 3mm thick extruded aluminium with a matt finish. This gives a scoreboard depth of 4″ (or 5″ with wall mounting brackets). We can also supply the electronics mounted to a fascia if you already have a suitable enclosure to put them in.

Weight & power

Weight

Our scoreboards are constructed very well, and the payoff for this is weight. The weight is around 2.5kg per square foot. Therefore, a scoreboard measuring 3 feet by 2 feet will weigh about 15kg, while a 5 by 4 feet scoreboard is around 50kg.

Power consumption

A scoreboard using 6 and 9 inch digits has a maximum power consumption of 3.6 amps at 13.8 V (50 watts). A scoreboard using 13 and 16 inch digits has a maximum power consumption of 10.5 amps at 13.8 V (145 watts).

What this means is that if your scoreboard is powered from an 80 AH leisure battery, in optimal conditions you should expect it to last around 22 hours for the 50 watt scoreboard, or around 7.5 hours for the 145 watt scoreboard.

Scoreboard viewing angle

The LEDs we use in our scoreboards have a wide viewing angle of 120 degrees at full brightness. Beyond this angle, the displays get gradually dimmer until about 165 degrees when the aluminium frame starts to obscure the LEDs from view.

Mounting options

The scoreboards are available with a range of mounting options and we will manufacture the scoreboard case to fit your requirements. If you are planning on mounting the scoreboard to a wall, we can provide wall mounting brackets for a more permanent installation or handles to hang the scoreboard up on if you are bringing the scoreboard out for every match.

Threaded inserts are available if you are mounting the scoreboard between posts. There is a tripod mount available for smaller scoreboards, and trolleys are available too. (Images of mounting options on the rugby scoreboard FAQs)

Controllers

We have simplified the available controllers for the rugby scoreboards down to two options. Both function in an identical manner with one being mounted to the side of the scoreboard, while the other is a wireless handheld controller. Both are easy to use for setting/starting the timer and adjusting the team scores.

Side mounted control panel
The wireless handheld controller

The wireless handheld controller has an internal rechargeable battery which is charged via a mini USB connector. A USB cable is supplied, but not a USB charger (We don’t normally supply a USB charger as we’re sure you’ll already have at least one available for you to use, and if we can save you a cost and keep a charger out of landfill, we all win).

The wireless transmission range of the handheld controller is 200 metres in optimal conditions, easily covering any rugby ground.

Wireless handheld controller specification

Wireless handheld controllers come in a small ABS case. This offers good convenience, but they are not designed to be weathertight and should not be exposed to wet weather.

The case measures 110mm by 73mm by 26mm (4.3″ by 2.9″ by 1.0″) and has an attached aerial measuring 93mm (3.6″). It weighs around 180g.

The wireless handheld controllers have an internal rechargeable battery with a typical battery operational time of 18 hours and a wireless range of 200 meters in optimal conditions.

The wireless handheld controller costs an additional £210 to the prices in the table above.

Power Options

All of our scoreboards operate at 12 Volts, allowing them to be powered from a 12V power supply (included in the price) or from a leisure battery (similar to a car battery).

The advantage of being able to power the scoreboard from a battery means a smaller scoreboard can be taken to any side-line at any ground, but even for a permanent installation a battery is often used to power the scoreboard as it can mean a significant cost saving in infrastructure to get mains electric to the ideal location of your scoreboard.

The cost of a battery includes an 80Ah leisure battery, battery terminals (for connecting the scoreboard power cable easily to the battery) a fused recharging cable and an upgraded power supply (for recharging the battery) for £105.

Solar Panel

If you are powering your scoreboard from a leisure battery, a solar panel is a brilliant addition to your setup. It removes the risk of someone forgetting to recharge the leisure battery between games and protects the battery from under and over charging.

Details can be found on our scoreboard solar power page. The cost is £240.

Scoreboard Trolley

If you don’t have a suitable place to site your scoreboard permanently and it’s too big to carry in and out for each match, or you are worried about vandalism, then maybe you need one of our trolleys.

They are very robust, manufactured from galvanised steel and use quality 8 inch castors (2 swivel, 2 fixed). Our standard width is 80cm but can go smaller, if your doors won’t allow for it.

Due to the volatile costs of galvanised steel, we can only offer a guide price until we know the order is likely to go ahead and can then quote precisely.
